The MARS system has eight ports, each capable of delivering a portion of the total 7.25 KW of power available. This power is in two forms: 48 vdc and 375 vdc.

The MARS system is connected to shore via a Gigabit Ethernet link. This is distributed to the science ports via Cisco router providing theoretical connectivity at 100 Megabits/second. The system uses TCP/IP for communication. Each port is a Class C subnet and can support up to 255 separate IP addresses, 10 of which are reserved for administration purposes and testing. A limited number are routable through the MARS firewall.

1. How many IP addresses are required by your system? These will be assigned by MARS operations staff.

2. How many routable IP addresses are required (up to 10)?

3. What port access is required (ssh, ftp, http, etc.) over what protocol (TCP or UDP,) and from what IP address?

NOTE: This request needs to be reasonable in nature as each request increases the configuration changes required and security concerns for the network.

The MARS facility consists of a shore station, control room, electronics lab, visiting scientists space and mobilization space. The control room and shore station are located in a secure space with limited access (escorted.) Some space is available on a first come first served basis for user equipment.

1. Does your project need space for local equipment? I.e.: RAID array, server, etc.

2. What are the power requirements of your equipment? How many watts?

4. There is limited UPS coverage, therefore it must be provided by the user if required.

The MARS node is located due west of Moss Landing and can be reached in two hours and 10 minutes by ship. Simple deployments, for example, stand alone instruments with less than 100m of cable can usually be deployed or recovered during one dive day.

MARS Simulator

All equipment to be connected to MARS is required to be wet tested on the MARS Wet Node Simulator (WNS). The testing requires a day of test tank time and a technician. These tests will ensure proper loading and verify inrush specifications. Tests will also be done to test connectivity. Addresses provided for subsea equipment will be deployed, addressing for surface equipment, servers, controllers, RAID arrays, etc., will be determined based on the location (WNS or MARS). These addresses may need to be reset prior to deployment.
