Data Systems
Data systems are developed at MBARI to ensure that ocean observations and measurements are reliably collected and, processed, and stored securely and permanently on shore. MBARI's data systems include tools that give meaning to observations and the efforts to coordinate how measurements and observations are annotated. This ensures that different collections of information, both within MBARI and within the larger oceanographic community, can be used together to better understand the oceans.
- Marine Metadata Interoperability is a community effort to standardize metadata (terms that describe data and how they are collected and processed.)
- Plug and Work technologies are protocols, standards, and additional technology that enable straightforward, practical integration of oceanographic instruments with observing platforms and networks.
- Software infrastructure integrates self-describing, plug-and-work instruments into the observatory, and allows remote instrument control from shore, data acquisition and telemetry, autonomous system management, and autonomous event detection and response.
- Shore Side Data System provides information on where data are located.
- Video Annotation and Reference System provides software tools for annotating and then retrieving descriptions of video images.
- Visual event detection is an automated system for finding images of interest on video.
- Metadata Oriented Query Assistant and Collaborative Ocean Observatory Portal are tools that facilitate collaborative experiments and development efforts.
