Graphs and reports of core properties from shipboard CTD bottle samples taken in Monterey Bay, from 1989-Present. Profiling CTD graphs. Time series cruises occurred at approximately 21 days intervals.  From 1989-1992 the cruises occupied 4 stations at which complete sampling was conducted (stations C1, H1, H3, C7), but in 1993 these stations were reduced to 3 along an onshore/offshore transect (stations C1, Mooring1; Mooring2).  Major stations consist of C1, C7, H1, H3, Mooring1, and Mooring2.  Included in the time series data are the quarterly hydrographic surveys for the stations C1; 67-50,Mooring1, H3; 67-55 and Mooring2.  (station mapmethods and materials).

Chemical and taxonomic updates lag the physical and biological as these parameters are batch processed.  Taxonomic updates occur once, at the end of the year while the nutrients are updated quarterly.

DEPTH CONTOURS

Physical (temperature, salinity, sigma T), biological (chlorophyll, primary production, fluorescence) and chemical (nitrate, phosphate, silicate) characteristics, from 1989 to 2010.  Chemical data were only taken at station M1 for the time series.    These graphs were produced by MatLab using trisurf() and shade interp.  Please be aware that the scaling may be different for each graph, this may affect comparisons by stations.  Click on one of the thumbnails below for an enlarged image.

TMP_maj_0m_char.jpg (138685 bytes) SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS

A 3 panel figure of surface (depth < 10m) characteristics: Anomalies, Daily Averages, and Seasonal Cycle of physical , biological , chemical , and taxonomic  properties over a 20+ year period, from 1989 to present.

Nitrate profiles were collected  only at the Mooring1 site.  Characteristics for additional depths (60, 100, 150, and 200m) may be found here.

Data were daily averaged,  interpolated to 14 day intervals, and smoothed (9 point smoothing for the anomalies and 3 point smoothing for the annual cycle).  Anomalies were calculated by subtracting the interpolated value from averaged values for the corresponding 14 day interval.  Stations Mooring1, H3, 67-50 have been combined.  Stations Mooring, 67-55 have been combined.  Major stations are C1, C7, H1, H3, Mooring1, and Mooring2.

A 9 point running mean (red line) was added to the Daily Average graph  as well as a linear regression (green line); daily averaged values are represented as the blue dots. The slope from the linear regression is per day.

Please note the Seasonal Cycle has a 3 point running mean applied.  Also shown in this graph is the climatology (black dashed lines) contrasted to the annual mean for the last three years, i.e. 1997, 1998, and 1999 (blue line).

These graphs were produced by MatLab.   Interpolation is the Stineman method.
