In 1989 under the direction of Francisco Chavez, a mooring observing system was created. To date we have 2 instrumented moorings in Monterey Bay (data archive) and have developed instrumented drifters. With these moorings and drifters we have studied the ocean in Monterey Bay, and have also exported this technology to the equatorial Pacific, where we participate in the TAO/TOGA arrays and the IRON Experiment, and to the Pacific northwest as part of the NOPP program.
