March 1, 2003: Leg 2, Arrival
The
Leg 2 scientists all arrived safely into La Paz by Friday evening to find
the city in the middle of its Carnival festival. The sounds of drums,
singing, dancing, and celebration could be heard from every hotel room.
However, if all the passports get turned into the Captain by 10 am
Saturday, we could have a short dive on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday
everyone made their way to the Western Flyer tied up at the commercial
docks at Pichilingue. The Western Flyer was different enough from the
fishing fleet to be easily identified by the taxi drivers (see images of
Flyer tied up). We leave the boisterous sounds of Carnival for a beautiful
sunset and a flat calm sea as we head for the southern Guaymas Basin.
