Leg 7, Day #4
We
continue to work our way northward along the coast of Baja California.
Seasonal northwesterly winds of 25-30 knots do not impede our progress,
although they prevented any diving operations today. Hydrographic stations
at 28° N and 29° N were completed. The station at 28° N was located
about 20 miles to the west of Cedros Island, and we encountered a westward
current of about 1 knot. The iron profile for this station is shown below
and shows a maximum iron concentration at about 150 m of 10 nM. This was
about 5–10 times greater than peak concentrations at stations to the
south. Perhaps the offshore (westward) current transported shelf waters,
which were rich in iron, to this location.
